Lower Your Coffee Shop's Startup Costs With G90 Galvanized Steel Fridges

by Marvin Carroll

Opening a new coffee shop isn't cheap. There are construction costs, equipment expenses, legal fees and more. In light of all these total expenses, you'll likely want to save money anywhere you can if you're opening a coffee shop. One way you can lower these startup costs is by having your refrigeration contractor install fridges that have painted G90 galvanized steel exteriors. These fridges will be inexpensive, and they'll last for years.

G90 Galvanized Steel Is Inexpensive

The exteriors of commercial refrigerators, or their "skins," are made from four different metals:

  • stainless steel, which is strong and doesn't rust, but also is expensive
  • galvalume, which is strong, but is the second-most-expensive option and will rust
  • aluminum, which won't rust, but will dent and scratch
  • G90 galvanized steel, which is inexpensive and strong, but will rust

Of these four options, G90 galvanized steel is the least expensive one. Therefore, refrigerators with walls made from G90 galvanized steel tend to be cheaper than other commercial refrigerators.

Paint Will Prevent G90 Galvanized Steel From Rusting

If you purchase refrigerators with unprotected G90 galvanized steel skins, though, they will get wet and rust. In a coffee shop, refrigerators can't be kept dry. Your cafe's refrigerators will get wet when baristas do the following:

  • spill drinks
  • wipe down the fridges with wet towels
  • brush the bottom of them when mopping

Paint, however, protects G90 galvanized steel without significantly increasing the cost of a refrigerator. It creates a barrier between any water that contacts the refrigerator so that the iron in the steel and water can't react and form rust. At the same time, paint isn't expensive and it can easily be applied to refrigerators' skins during manufacturing.

Thus, refrigerators with painted G90 galvanized steel skins won't just keep your startup costs low, but they'll also keep you from having to spend money replacing rusted refrigerators in a few years.

As you plan the build-out of your coffee shop, talk to the refrigeration contractor you're working with about using refrigerators that have painted G90 galvanized steel exteriors. Ask them to use these refrigerators both in the front-of-house area, where baristas are preparing drinks, and in the back-of-house portion, where there will be larger fridges for storing milk. They should be able to find models for each area, and they should be able to give you a great price on these fridges because they're made from an inexpensive metal.
