The cold winter months is the perfect time to plan for outside projects. You can take your time and really come with some good ideas on how to make your yard family friendly. Deck Materials

When it comes to decks, you have an array of choices to make, including the type of material to use when building it.

Pressure treated wood is often used for decks, because it is not expensive. It is made from the pine tree. The only drawback, is this wood can splinter easily if you do not keep it properly maintained.

Softwood, such as cedar and redwood are also used for decks. Both of these woods are resistant to insects and rot, and are beautiful because of their rich color. Sun can damage these woods so make sure you have a sunblock sealant applied annually.

Tropical hardwoods, such as tigerwood, ipe, red tauari, and cumaru, are types of hardwoods you can use for your deck. These woods are rich in color and durable. They are also resistant to insects and rot.

If you do not want to use wood, choose plastic lumber, which comes in many colors, and is resistant to stains and the weather. You will also not have to worry about wood splinters. If you are eco-friendly, plastic is 100% recyclable.

Deck Railings

Once you decide on the material, you have to decide on the type of railing you want to use. Wood railings are often used with wood decks. You can use the same type of wood you used for your deck, or use a completely different type to make your deck look more unique.

Capped composite railings are also used and you will see them used most with plastic decking materials. Metal is another option, such as iron, galvanized steel, and aluminum. Metal decking is generally slimmer when compared to wood or plastic, so you can have a better view to the outside.

If you live in a windy area, tempered glass panel railings will allow you to sit on your deck without the wind blowing everything around.  They cover the entire space, but you still have a great view to the outside.
