The Space Under Your Stairs Can Easily Be Converted Into A New Pantry

by Marvin Carroll

Living in a house that does not have a lot of storage room can make life a bit challenging. If you have little to no storage in your house and want to find additional space, you may want to consider having the space under your stairs transformed into a pantry. Use the following guide to learn the steps a contractor will take to transform this compact space for you.

Create a Doorway

The contractor will use a stud finder to find the studs in the stairwell. The door to the new pantry will need to be created between two of the studs. Once the contractor finds the studs, he or she will cut away a portion of the wall so that a doorway can be created. At this point, you can choose to have a door hung in the entryway or simply have the open space framed to create a finished look.

Add Lighting

Next, you will need lighting to be added to the space so that you can see the items that are stored inside of it. The lighting can be placed in the ceiling or lights can be added to the walls of the pantry. The lighting needs to be added before the walls are put up so that they can be strung up the walls and the wires can be hidden behind the drywall.

Create Walls

The contractor will then hang sheets of drywall on the walls to give the pantry a finished look. You do not want to leave the walls of the pantry exposed because pests could easily gain access to the items that are stored in the pantry. The walls can be hung, mudded, and sanded down within the course of just one day.

Add Shelving

Next, the contractor can add shelving to the room so that you can have places to store everything. The shelves will be connected to the studs that are keeping up the stairs. This will give the shelves the strength they need to hold both light and heavy items with ease.

Once the contractor (like those at First Choice Siding Ltd) has completed building the pantry for you, you can start using it right away. Be sure that you store items that you store canned, bottled, and sealed food in the pantry to ensure that you do not attract bugs to the space. To keep critters at bay, soak cotton balls in mint and lay around the bottom of the pantry. Your pantry will smell great and rodents will stay away because they cannot stand the smell of mint.
